Thanksgiving Traditions
Emma Clark
Thanksgiving is a holiday that most families celebrate during the month of November. To celebrate this holiday, people take part in many traditions throughout the day. Eating a turkey on Thanksgiving is one tradition that has been around for quite some time. In fact, Americans have been eating turkey for Thanksgiving ever since Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. Some other common foods eaten on Thanksgiving day are cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn bread and all kinds of pies and cobblers. For most people, the food is the best part of Thanksgiving.
Another Thanksgiving tradition that many people take part in is the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade. The Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade has not been around for long. Louis Bamberger started the parade in 1924, and today many families sit around the television on Thanksgiving to watch it. Kids especially enjoy watching all the floats and inflatables travel down the street, and the performances are a fun part for people of all ages to enjoy.
The annual NFL games on Thanksgiving day are another tradition for many families to watch. Each year the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys play on Thanksgiving, along with a few other teams. Families love cheering on their teams on Thanksgiving. Traditions are what make Thanksgiving a special day for all families to enjoy together and celebrate those things for which they are most thankful.
