It is beginning to look a lot like Nutcracker season. Many families begin their holiday season with baking cookies, putting up decorations or, perhaps, seeing a Nutcracker performance. Schrader Youth Ballet Company is performing its annual “The Nutcracker (Clara’s Dream)” at the Smooth Theatre in Parkersburg and People’s Bank Theatre in Marietta. They are performing December 16-17. SYBC will celebrate fifty one years of performing in this upcoming season.
The Nutcracker has been modified since it was originally premiered in Petersburg, Russia. SYBC choreographer and mentor, Duncan Noble restaged the production with his choreography but still captured the meaning of the original story. The SYBC production begins with Clara as a little girl who falls asleep after a party and dreams the entire story. Dr. Drosselmeyer has a plan for Clara to fall in love with the Nutcracker Prince. He showers her in gifts, such as dolls that come to life and perform for her entertainment. He eventually casts a spell that puts her to sleep and plans for a mice attack. The Nutcracker Prince arrives just in time to save the terrified girl. Then they venture into the land of snow.
Thirty members of the Schrader Youth Ballet will be joined by college dancers (former SYBC students) and professionals to bring the magical and timeless story life to.
