It’s playoff season for Major League Soccer. Eight teams entered the knockout round and only four moved on. On October 31, FC Dallas faced off against the Portland Timbers and New York City FC played the Philadelphia Union. FC Dallas dominated the Portland Timbers when it came to shots in the first half, but Diego Valeri scored a goal in the 23rd minute for the Timbers off of a free kick. Valeri was played a good ball and he was able to tuck the ball away with a near post shot. In the second half, Timbers defender Larrys Mabiala was given a red card in the 58th minute. The Timbers had to play a man down for the rest of the game, but Valeri was able to score his second goal to put the Timbers up 2-0. FC Dallas was not giving up without a fight. FC Dallas’ Matt Hedges finished a ball that came loose in front of the goal, four minutes into stoppage time. Portland ended up beating Dallas with a 2-1 win and will face off against the Seattle Sounders November 4 at 5:30. New York City FC and the Philadelphia Union played in Yankee Stadium after it was outfitted to look like a soccer field. NYCFC’s Ismael Tajouri-Shradi was able to get an early goal in the 10th minute with a stellar volley. David Villa followed shortly after with another goal for NYCFC. Maximiliano Moralez was able to secure NYCFC’s third goal in the 78th minute with a nice an impressive chip over the goalkeeper. Philadelphia Union did not get any on target shots off during the game until Ilsinho set up Borek Dockal for an easy goal in the 83rd minute. The Philadelphia Union gave it their best shot, but it was not enough to stop NYCFC from securing their spot in the next round. The final score was 3-1 in favor of the home team. NYCFC are set to take on Atlanta United FC on November 4 at 7:30. Fan favorite LAFC took on Real Salt Lake City on November 1 at Banc of California Stadium. Real Salt Lake City was the first team to put a point on the board when Damir Kreilach brought the ball down with his chest at the penalty dot and scored a nice goal. LAFC struck back ten minutes later when Danilo Silva headed the ball into the net. Nine minutes into the second half, Christian Ramirez scored a banger from outside the 18 yard box. LAFC thought they had things under wraps, but Kreilach came out of nowhere with another fantastic goal. He calmly karate kicked the ball into the right side of the net. LAFC’s goalie didn’t stand a chance against his strike. Real Salt Lake City wasn’t done yet, they managed to work the ball down the field and send a nice ball into the box. They got lucky when the ball hit off LAFC defender, Walker Zimmerman, and found its way into the back of the net. Real Salt Lake City goalkeeper, Nick Rimando made some great saves that kept his team ahead until the final whistle. LAFC were favored to win over Real Salt Lake City, but the underdogs prevailed with a final score of 3-2. That was the theme of the night for MLS Soccer. The Columbus Crew kicked off against DC United in Washington DC on November 1. It was a game to remember and perhaps, the most exciting game in the knockout round. The match started out in favor of DC United when they scored off of a loose ball. DC United sent in a good ball near the cross bar from the left side and Columbus goalkeeper, Zack Steffen, looked like he was going to catch it. Steffen could not hold onto the ball and DC United’s Frederic Brillant was able to head the ball into the back of the net. Nine minutes later, Columbus Crew’s Federico Higuain was able to score after the ball came loose in the box. Both teams fought hard in the second half, but no one managed to score. This took the two teams into overtime. Higuain was able to score another amazing goal that put the Crew up 2-1 in extra time. DC United refused to give up and with four minutes left in extra time, Nick DeLeon was able to get a volley past Steffen to tie the game 2-2. This sent the teams into penalty kicks. Columbus Crew’s Steffen stopped two penalty kicks. With the game on the line, DeLeon stepped up to take his shot on Steffen. DeLeon hit the ball way over the crossbar and sent the Columbus Crew to the next round. The final score was 3-2 on penalties in favor of Columbus. The first leg of the conference semifinals are set to kick off on November 4. Real Salt Lake City will play Sporting Kansas City, the Portland Timbers will take on the Seattle Sounders, the Columbus Crew will kick off against the New York Red Bulls, and Atlanta United FC will battle New York City FC.
